  History of VFW Post 12130 Cebu, Philippines                                          

images (6)     Post 12130 was founded in honor of Ulysses G.Buzzard Medal of Honor recipient of the Spanish-American War At El Caney, Cuba, 1 July 1898 for actions which earned him this prestigious honor.  SGT Buzzard is buried in the Cebu Veterans Memorial Park, Labangon, Cebu.

16 February 2013 VFW Post 12130 was activated. Alex Roese was the first commander.

26 March 2013 VFW Post 12130 participated in the Talisay landing ceremony, Talisay Cebu. Commander Alex Roese, sat on the stage with other VIP’s that included Talisay City Mayor, Vice Governor of Cebu, Congressman Gullas, several Philippine military commanders and the senior consular agent of the United States for Cebu. The Commander and the senior consular agent raised the US flag at the ceremony.

Memorial Day 2013, several Post members and their wives participated in ceremonies at Ulysses G. Buzzard’s gravesite.  Flowers emplaced at the gravesite. Seventy US flags were placed on the American graves in the cemetery.

In June 2013 Alex Roese was reelected as Commander.

In June 2013 District 3 Korea) hosted the Department of Pacific Areas annual convention in Cebu. Post members assisted District 3 convention members.

On July 4th 2013 several members and their wives participated at the 4th of July ceremony hosted by The Philippine/American Chamber of Commerce at the Radisson Blue hotel Cebu.

October 20, 2013 several Post members and their wives traveled to Palo, Leyte to participate in the Leyte Landing ceremony.

On Thanksgiving Day 2013, several Post members and their wives joined members of the Retiree Activity Office Cebu for a Thanksgiving dinner.

26 March 2014 VFW Post 12130 participated in the Talisay landing ceremony, Talisay Cebu. Commander Alex Roese, sat on the stage with other VIP’s that included Talisay City Mayor, Vice Governor of Cebu, several Philippine military commanders and the senior consular agent of the United States for Cebu. The Commander and the senior consular agent raised the US flag at the ceremony.

Memorial Day 2014, several Post members and their wives participated in ceremonies at Ulysses G. Buzzard’s gravesite.  Flowers emplaced at the gravesite. Seventy US flags were placed on the American graves in the cemetery. The post members were joined by 25 US Navy Seabee’s cleaning up the cemetery and cutting grass. Afterward the Post members took the Seabee’s to a sports bar and restaurant and fed them and they played pool and darts.

On July 4th 2014 several members and their wives participated at the 4th of July ceremony hosted by The Philippine/American Chamber of Commerce at the Marco Polo hotel Cebu. Several of the Navy Seabee’s received gratis tickets from the VFW Post and Phil Am Chamber of Commerce and attended also.

October 20, 2014 several Post members and their wives traveled to Palo, Leyte to participate in the Leyte Landing ceremony.

On Thanksgiving Day 2014 several Post members and their wives joined members of the Retiree Activity Office Cebu for a Thanksgiving dinner.

December 2014 Life Member Ray Shackelford aka Santa Ray and several members of the post and their wives distributed Christmas gifts, fruits and candies to the pediatric wards of two hospitals to bring some holiday cheer.

26 March 2015 VFW Post 12130 participated in the Talisay landing ceremony, Talisay Cebu. District 7 Commander John Gilbert, sat on the stage with other VIP’s that included Talisay City Mayor, Vice Governor of Cebu, several Philippine military commanders and the senior consular agent of the United States for Cebu. The District 7 Commander and the senior consular agent raised the US flag at the ceremony.

27 March 2015 VFW Post 12130 and the Americal Division Veterans Association dedicated a monument in Tabogon/Ilihan Cebu marking the site where over 9800 Japanese surrendered on August 28, 1945. The monument was a joint project between the VFW Post 12130 and the Americal Division Veterans Association.

In June 2015 Michael Tierney was elected as Commander of VFW Post 12130. VFW Post 12130 earned All State recognition for the 2014-2015 VFW year while Alex Roese was Commander.
